Teaching Web Accessibility
What is a Web Accessibility Trainer?
A Web accessibility trainer is anyone that teaches or shares the vision and techniques of Web
accessibility. Does this definition apply to you? If not, perhaps it will develop as you continue
through this content. Web accessibility is both an art and a science — it requires personal
motivation, growth, and a bit of expertise. This edition will help you to share the importance of
Web accessibility with others as well as help you become proficient in the technical aspects of Web
access.
You likely fit into one of these roles:
- Web accessibility consultant or trainer
- Administrator
- Webmaster
- Teacher or faculty member
- Web developer or designer
- Someone who feels that Web accessibility is important
Anyone that shares their understanding of Web accessibility is a Web accessibility trainer – whether that is in a formal training session or in your daily work and interactions with others. Regardless of your role, the intent of this training product is to give you the knowledge, tools, expertise, and motivation to be an effective accessibility trainer.
Note
There are four basic keys to being an effective accessibility trainer or teacher:
- Teach your students to understand how people with disabilities use the Web.
- Teach them why Web accessibility is important.
- Give them the knowledge and tools to design accessibly.
- Motivate them to apply accessibility techniques in their future Web development.
Though this sounds very simplistic, applying these four keys can make you a very successful accessibility trainer. And, in order to successfully teach these concepts, you must first understand and apply these points yourself.
